8 Spring Car Care Tips for National Car Care Month

We’re not big fans of every day and every month of the year being a National Something or Other Day. But here’s one we can wholeheartedly get behind: National Car Care Month.

The Car Care Council came up with idea of National Car Care month for both April and October because these are two critical times of year to make sure your car is in good operating order. The whole idea is to get any niggling issues fixed before the rigors of summer, or winter, driving.

B&M Auto in Waukesha has the recycled auto parts you need to keep your car runningAfter chugging through the awfulness of a Milwaukee winter, April is the perfect time to show your car some love. With a little attention, it’ll serve you well and you’ll avoid more costly repairs down the road.

And, of course, B&M Auto is here to help with a huge inventory of quality recycled auto parts.

Quality Recycled Auto Parts—Guaranteed.

Concerned about the quality of recycled auto parts? We fully inspect everything at our Waukesha auto parts recycling center to ensure it is safe for use in your vehicle. Additionally, all parts sold by B&M Auto Sales and Parts are covered by our 90-day warranty, 15-day return policy, and 30-day exchange policy.

8 Spring Car Care Checks To Do This Month

1. Check fluid levels.

If you haven’t checked the fluid levels in your car over the winter, now is the time to pull those dipsticks and take a look. Engine oil, power steering, brake, and transmission fluids should all be checked.  While you’re at it, check your windshield washer and antifreeze/coolant levels. If you’re running low on coolant or wiper fluid, B&M stocks recycled coolant and wiper fluid. Give them a try and do something good for the environment and for your wallet.

2. Check hoses and belts.

Look to see if any are cracked, fraying, loose or showing signs of wear. Gently push your finger on hoses to see if they are still pliable or if they have become brittle. Hoses or belts showing signs of excessive wear or brittleness should be replaced. We have replacement hoses and belts for a wide variety of vehicles at our Waukesha auto parts recycling center, and if we don’t have what you need we can easily find it for you.

3. Check your battery.

You want to make sure the cables are secured and the connection posts are clean and free of any corrosion. It’s a good idea to have your battery tested, too. If it needs replacing, we stock recycled batteries for all types of cars and trucks.

4. Check your brakes.

Your brake system should be inspected every year. If you haven’t had this done, Car Care month is a good time. Many garages will do a brake inspection at no charge. For DIY’ers, B&M has many salvaged brake system parts available at tremendous savings. Often, the rotors, drums and other braking system components in wrecked cars are in barely used condition. We only stock parts which have a good, usable service life.

5. Check Your Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning System.

You probably haven’t used the air conditioning much over the winter, but now’s the time to test it out and make sure it works—not mid-June when we get our first scorcher. Similarly, don’t try to limp through the last few cold days of spring without your heater or defroster working. This is Wisconsin, after all. We could get a few inches of snow in mid-April. Our Waukesha auto salvage yard has recycled blower motors and other heating and air conditioning components at tremendous prices. Just let us know what you need.

6. Check your steering and suspension system.

Shock absorbers, struts and parts like ball joints, and tie rod ends all wear out over time. If you’re driving around with worn out chassis components you’re not just getting a lousy ride, you’re also prematurely wearing out your tires and risking a serious accident if a critical part fails. B&M can help you out with recycled shocks, struts and other suspension and steering parts at incredible prices.

7. Check your wipers and lights.

Winter is rough on windshield wipers. Even if you started out with new wipers in December, chances are they’re about shot by now. We often find virtually new wiper blades and motors on cars which have been totaled in accidents. When we do, we offer them at tremendous savings at our Waukesha auto recycling center. Same with lighting system components. Whether it’s a replacement headlight bulb, an entire headlamp or fog lamp you need, check with us before paying the exorbitant prices dealerships want for new parts.

8. Check your tires.

April showers bring a lot of slipping and sliding if your tires are worn out. While bald spots and bulges are easy to spot, you’ll want to use a penny to check your tread depth. Just put one into a tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing toward you. Try this in several grooves on the tire, from inner grooves to outer grooves. If Lincoln’s head is not covered at all by tread, you have less than 2/32” inch tread depth. Time to replace your tires. If you’re looking for tires, let us know what size you need. We have a great selection of used tires at our Waukesha salvage yard, many in fantastic condition with thousands of miles of use left in them.
